The Alaskan Panhandle is an appendage of the state of Alaska that extends south of the main area of the state, along the North-South extending Pacific coast of North America, being from top to bottom equivalent to the north border of neighbouring British Columbia to its mid point. The Panhandle is the coastal area that denies British Columbia access to the Pacific Ocean. It was explored settled and claimed by the Russian Empire, prior to being sold to the United States.

Haines Township, where most of the action occurs on Gold Rush in Alaska, is located on the Panhandle.
